Possibly Related – my arse!

Saturday, 3 May 2008

Some of you may have noticed that WordPress have sprung a new “feature” on their blogs without warning. A box appears at the end of the post with a number of “possibly related” links.

At first the “possibly related” links seemed to link to my own posts, so appeared to be a good idea. But then, my post last night about the advent of punk, and the supposed “Year Zero”, appeared with links to some very strange sites. And I could immediately see the potential for abuse. I’ve turned off the “feature” immediately.

On investigation, I found a page that explained what was going on. It’s written by Matt, who judging by his photo looks as though he was twagging off lessons to write it; the kind of spotty yoof with near-zero attention span who thinks his generation invented the Internet. I think it’s a bit of a cheek to introduce it without warning and even more of a cheek to make it an opt-out “feature” – no doubt aimed at sneaking advertising into WordPress blogs without control.

Those of us old enough may recall the original Apple II manual, which defined “feature” as “a bug as described by the marketing department”. Quite!

*snork* those of is in IT still often do refer to a bug in an application as a feature 🙂

I’m not sure what twagging or yoof mean, but thanks. 😉
