A Wasted Journey

Monday, 21 April 2008

Aaaargh! I hate it when this happens. If I were feeling more fragile or more hormonal I might well have a wobbly.

I traipsed all the way over to the Bridge Club, only to find that it’s a comp night. And on comp nights there’s no duty member, so as a loose woman who no longer has a regular partner I’m not able to play on comp nights. And I don’t seem able to find a partner who stays around.

I’m pissed off and need a hug.

Pork and Apricot Pies

I made a batch of pies this afternoon. These are Pork & Apricot, taking advantage of the seemingly permanent half-price sale at the Barrow branch of Julian Graves to get sage and dried apricots.

The really nice thing, though, is that for once I managed to get the pastry right. It didn’t crumble when I rolled it out, and it’s stayed nicely firm when rolled out thinly and baked. They fell out of their pots without sticking or breaking up. I wonder if I could do that again?

On the road again

Monday, 21 April 2008

It’s been six months since I did any running. A string of respiratory problems coupled with bad weather put me off, and I’ve gone horribly out of condition, as witnessed by my panting and wheezing up Pennine slopes yesterday. And it’s long past time I did something about it.

So today, with the return at last of some quite nhice weather, I donned running vest and tracky bottoms and went right back to basics. Six batches of one minute running, two minutes walking. It took me almost to the far end of the Walney bridge before turning for home. And at the end, I felt almost as wrecked as I did when I started this program nearly three years ago. But then, before six months were up I’d run a sub-60-minute 10k and two half-marathons. There’s hope for me yet!

It’s nice to have a hot shower afterwards. Right – same again on Wednesday. I expect my followers to hold me to this!
